Authors have been revealed, and we're proud to say that Autistic Exchange 2018 was a huge success!
Thank you to everyone who nominated, signed up, wrote, beta'd, and commented, and a special thanks to our pinch hitter, EnvyBakemono!
If you have feedback on how this year went, or suggestions for next year, please comment below, or send the mods an email at autexmods at gmail.
Thoughts on next year:
We're considering widening this to the more general Neurodiversity Exchange next year. This would mean that participants would not only match on fandom/character, but also on neurodiversity types
For example, I could offer autism and anxiety for Briar Moss and Trisana Chandler in Emelan - Tamora Pierce, and would match with someone who requested either autism or anxiety and either Briar or Tris.
If you have feedback on this idea, please comment or email us.
Have a great August, and thanks again for participating!!
Autistic Exchange 2018
Sticky: Mar. 24th, 2018 02:22 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
This exchange is for autistic people and autistic characters, by autistic people.
Nominate characters who are canonically autistic, such as Kevin Blake from Eureka or Lou Arrendale from The Speed of Dark, or who you think of (or want to read fic about) as autistic, such as Belle and Beast in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991) or the Grinch in Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas (1966). Nominate their canons, too. We are open to RPF under the condition that all real persons portrayed are dead. We are also open to Original Work under the condition that any nominated character (for instance, Pirate Captain, Princess, or Paladin) be intended to be written and read as autistic.
Request canons and characters who you would like to see more of in fic.
Offer canons and characters you are familiar enough with that you think you can competently write a complete story of at least 500 words about them.
Keep in mind while nominating, requesting, and offering characters that those characters must be autistic in the fic. Self-diagnosis is acceptable. Medical diagnosis is acceptable. Some canons do not have the concept (being speculative settings, or historically set and predating the coinage of the term), but the character(s) must think or behave in one or another manner that demonstrates they are autistic. See this post on scriptAutistic for suggestions.

Notes on signups:
OPTIONAL DETAILS ARE OPTIONAL.
Please include Do Not Wants in your signup, either in your (optional) letter or in the body of your signup. Respect your recipient’s Do Not Wants! Because we understand about it sometimes being hard to avoid DNWs (or they slip one’s mind or whatever), there is a two-strikes policy in place: if a writer posts a fic including any of its recip’s DNWs, they get a warning and an opportunity to replace the fic with one that is DNW-less. If the writer does not comply, they will be banned.
Just in case a writer and a recip don’t ship the same ships, we advise that you include a gen prompt alongside any shippy prompt.
Letters are optional, but can be found on this Dreamwidth community post. We encourage participants to write letters in order to elaborate on their requests, prompts, wants, DNWs, and whether they are open to treats in media other than fic. Participants who write letters are (naturally) more likely to receive treats than participants who do not.
——-
In numbers:
Nominate 1-4 fandoms and 1-4 characters for each fandom.
Request 3-5 fandoms and 1-4 characters for each fandom.
Offer 4-7 fandoms and 1-6 characters for each fandom.
Keep in mind that this exchange uses OR matching, which means that you’ll match with someone who has offered or requested a minimum of 1 fandom and 1 character in that fandom that you have requested or offered. Tailor your optional details accordingly.
Write a complete fic with a minimum of 500 words about the characters(s) you and your assigned recipient match on.
You may also write any treats you choose to write for any other participant, which may be of any length. Treats may also be in other media, if the recipient expresses openness to receiving treats in that medium; if the recipient says they are okay with podfic treats, you may record them a podfic treat, or if the recipient says they are okay with art treats, you may draw or manip them an art treat. Your assignment, however, must be a fic. (But if you want to multimedia it and the recipient has expressed openness to treats in those other media, then as long as there’s 500+ words of fic you wrote somewhere in there and the final gift is a complete story, it’s cool.)

Just as a reminder: the reveals bug is still active on AO3. Because the AutEx AO3 collection is moderated, your stories will not be allowed to post properly until
mlravenwrites or I have been able to ensure that it will not preemptively reveal itself. The best way to handle this on your end is, when you go to post the story to the collection, Save Without Posting. The draft will then join the collection in quarantine, and we will make sure it's bug-free before letting it out. That way nobody gets an unpleasant surprise, or an early one.

Sign-Ups Closing in ~37 Hours

You'll have a little wiggle room past the official time of 11:59pm Eastern on June 21, because
mlravenwrites will be sleeping and I will be getting off work, but don't bank on having much wiggle room. If you haven't signed up, or you want to tweak your sign-up for any reason, do so soon!
